Iron (ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate, ferrous sulfate) is used to treat or prevent anemia (a lower than normal number of red blood cells) when the amount of iron taken in from the diet is not enough. Iron is a mineral that is available as a dietary supplement.
Your doctor will consider this test if you have symptoms like
Extreme fatigue.
Weakness.
Pale skin.
Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath.
Headache, dizziness or light-headedness.
Cold hands and feet.
Inflammation or soreness of your tongue.
Brittle nails.
Serum iron, TIBC & Saturation percentage are widely used for the diagnosis of Iron deficiency. This assay is useful for screening chronic iron overload diseases particulary Hemochromatosis. Percent saturation is usually normal or increased in Iron deficiency, Pregnancy & intake of oral contraceptives. Low TIBC is seen in Chronic inflammatory conditions, Hemochromatosis & Malignancies. Serum ferritin is a more sensitive & reliable indicator of Iron deficiency.
